News regarding IRS form SS-8

News regarding IRS form SS-8 and information regarding the new description of a registered dental hygienist not being considered an “independent contract laborer” is critical. The IRS has been cracking down on practices that are paying hygienists as independent contractors because, in part, of the uptick in SS-8 form requests. Form SS-8 can be submitted by either the dentist or the dental hygienist, asking for a determination of a hygienist’s status. If this form is submitted, the IRS will question both parties to determine the status.

Nobody wants the IRS flagging an individual or a business. If you utilize a registered dental hygienist to temp an occasional day and you do not put them on your payroll, you are at risk. If you have any questions regarding the new description of a registered dental hygienist and “independent contract laborer”, contact your CPA.
